The Ethiopian music community is mourning the loss of Teferi Assefa, a renowned drummer and percussionist, who passed away this past week in the United States due to medical complications. He was 53 years old.
Teferi Assefa was celebrated for his exceptional talent and groundbreaking contributions to the Ethiopian jazz scene. Known for his innovative percussion style and unique beats, Teferi played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Ethiopian music. There, he studied accounting while continuing his musical journey. Teferi formed the Lasta Sound Band, collaborated with legendary Ethiopian artist Tilahun Gessese, and released an album that further showcased his artistic versatility.
His colleagues and fans remember him as a humble professional with an effervescent personality and an unwavering commitment to professional ethics. He leaves behind a legacy of creativity, passion, and dedication to the art of drumming.
As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across the world. His contributions have enriched the cultural fabric of Ethiopia and will continue to inspire generations of musicians to come.
