Poet and renowned literary event organizer Misraq Terefe was arrested on January 22, 2017, and taken to the Addis Ababa Police Commission for questioning. The arrest has sparked concern among Ethiopia’s literary and artistic community, as the reason for her detention remains undisclosed.
Misraq Terefe appeared before the Federal First Instance Court, Arada Division, on the afternoon of January 31, 2025. The court granted the police seven days to conduct further investigations, scheduling a follow-up hearing for February 8, 2025. Following the hearing, she was returned to police custody.
Misraq Terefe is widely known for her contributions to Ethiopia’s art and literary scene, both domestically and internationally. She has played a pivotal role in organizing poetry and art nights and has hosted events featuring prominent literary figures such as Dr. Bedlu Wakjira and poet Tigist Mamo. Through her work, she has helped make poetry, literature, and discourse more accessible and popular among the public.
Despite her prominence in the artistic community, the circumstances surrounding her arrest remain unclear. Many in the literary and cultural circles are eagerly awaiting further developments, hoping for clarity regarding the charges or reasons behind her detention.
