Addis Ababa University Village: Long-Term Urban Development Project Launched
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — A large-scale development initiative known as the “Addis Ababa University Village” has been officially announced, marking the beginning of a ten-year project that aims to transform a key area of the capital into a center for education, research, tourism, and community life.
According to the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA), the project has been in planning for the past five years and is expected to be implemented in several phases. It is being developed in close coordination with Addis Ababa University and other stakeholders.
Selected for Its Educational and Cultural Potential
The project site was chosen based on its proximity to existing educational and cultural institutions. The planned village will be located between several well-known landmarks: it will be bordered by Shiro Meda shopping center to the north, Abrahot Library to the south, the Genfle and Kebena rivers to the east, and the Kechene River to the west.
Stakeholders have highlighted the area’s potential for academic growth, cultural preservation, and tourism development.
Project Components
According to the preliminary outline, the Addis Ababa University Village will include:
Religious institutions
Museums
Research centers
Educational facilities, including schools
Commercial shopping areas
Residential housing for students, researchers, and the wider community
These components are intended to create a multifunctional environment that integrates learning, commerce, and cultural engagement.
Phased Implementation Over Ten Years
The implementation of the University Village is planned over a ten-year period. Officials state that development will occur in phases, with infrastructure construction and institutional planning being executed in stages.
A comprehensive study is expected to be conducted before major construction begins. This study will assess feasibility, environmental impact, and social integration.
Community Engagement and Consultation
The project team has indicated that community involvement will be a central part of the planning and implementation process. A series of consultations are expected to take place to gather input from local residents, civil society, and academic professionals.
Authorities have emphasized that the village’s development will be informed by public discussions, with a focus on addressing local needs and concerns.
Broader Urban and Educational Context
The Addis Ababa University Village is one of several recent efforts aimed at modernizing urban infrastructure while supporting Ethiopia’s broader educational and cultural sectors. If completed as planned, the village could serve as a case study in combining institutional growth with long-term urban planning.
No specific start date for construction has been announced, and further details are expected to follow pending the completion of the required studies and consultations.
For continued updates, the public is encouraged to follow announcements from relevant institutions and media outlets.
